To explain the phenomenal success of GAFA (Google, Amazon, Facebook or Apple), the English word ecosystem or the German term Plattform-Ökonomie is often used. The term ecosystems is used to explain the strategy of companies in analogy to what happens in ecosystems in nature, also with the aim of recognizing or defining a (new) strategy for entrepreneurial success.
In future, there will be a large number of global platforms for a wide variety of areas. Management consultants McKinsey believe that by 2025, i.e. in just a few years' time, around a third of the world's total economic output will be generated in ecosystems.
On closer inspection, companies that are regarded as prime examples of the platform economy are not providers of technology. Rather, they use new technology with the aim of disruptively changing an established business model. These new opportunities are also helping the insurance industry.
